Chapter Eight

Unlike Mitch’s black SUV, Bob’s white one was showroom fresh. Not a speck of dust on the tan leather upholstery or pristine carpets. And Gracie was pretty sure it had been slobber free until now. But with Kahn in the back seat—or rather one of the two captain’s chairs that made up the back row—that probably wasn’t true anymore. The dog was whimpering and trying to pace while occasionally thrusting his head through the front seats to make contact with Gracie.

She honestly had no idea what command to use for this. “Sit” wasn’t working. And “stay”? It just confused the poor animal.

Because he senses how upset you are. So take a freaking breath, will you?

“Turn right,” she instructed Bob as they finally entered Keira’s little neighborhood. It had always seemed so quiet here. So uneventful. And hopefully it would be that way in the future. But for now, it had an apocalyptic quality that made her squirm in her seat.

“You’re such a good friend to her, Gracie. To all of us,” Bob told her.

“You’ve been great too,” she replied automatically. She couldn’t really hold a conversation, since her brain was otherwise occupied, trying to figure out what could possibly have gone wrong with the world’s most perfect couple. They had survived so much. The stoner years. The poverty years. Could life really be this cruel? To break them up when they were finally realizing their financial and creative goals?

“This is probably a bad time to ask,” Bob said suddenly. “But when all this is over, and everything’s back to normal…well…” He coughed, then gave her a nervous smile. “Would you have dinner with me some night?”

“Dinner?” Gracie stared in disbelief. “With you?” When his face fell, she reminded him quickly, “You’re married, Bob. So what the heck?”

“We’ve been separated for a couple of months,” he explained, his tone eager again. “I didn’t want anyone else at work to know. But I’ve wanted to tell you. For a lot of reasons.”

She pointed to the curb. “Park there. In front of the yellow house.”

While he complied, she forced herself to think this through. A couple of months? Didn’t that undercut everything she believed about this guy?

She eyed him warily. “When you talked to Detective Archer, did you mention this separation?”

“I didn’t think it was relevant. So, no.”

She winced. On the list of possible suspects, Bob had seemed even less dangerous than Nathan or Mitch. Mostly because his wife ruled with an iron rolling pin.

So what did this mean?

“Here’s the thing, Bob. We have a good working relationship, don’t we? We don’t want to mess that up.”

“I think about you, Gracie. A lot.”

She rubbed her eyes. “I can’t handle this right now. I thought you loved your wife. And I’m with Mitch. And my best friend is having a meltdown.”

Kahn seemed to catch the drift of the problem and gave a low growl that worked well on Bob.

“You’re right,” he said quickly. “This isn’t the time. Just take care of your friend. We’ll see you tomorrow.
